The Rolling Stones 'First Photo Sessions' boxed set is a fabulous opportunity to own a little piece of Rock & Roll history. I took this shot on their first afternoon gig at Studio 1 in Newport St. Mick and Keith are still wearing the jerkins they wore when they appeared at Eel Pie Island, before Andrew Loog Oldham signed them up. The Stones had previously played this weekly gig at the Marquee, however the venue changed because the owner was a friend of their previous manager and both of them were upset that the group had now gone to Andrew.

This is a shot from the 1st photographic session ever of the Stones. It was taken at the start of the road from London to Heathrow, opposite the art nouveau studio houses. Whilst the houses remain, the wall and the houses behind it have now been demolished. It was shot in the afternoon after we had visited Cheyne walk in Chelsea, Marble Arch and Hyde Park and was the only acceptable site in Hammersmith.

This shot was taken at ATV Studios in Birmingham just before they appeared on ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’; which was the first time they appeared on television. They were plugging their first single ‘Come On’, and it was the second and last time that they were wearing these checked jackets, as their manager Andrew Loog Oldham stated “they are not the image I want”.

This image shows Keith at the Blue-Boar Service Area on the M1 motorway to Birmingham. We had a fry-up there on the way to record ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’ and it was taken very early in the morning which Keith, as you can see from his demeanour, and the rest of the boys were not used to.

I was very lucky, in this third shot from Studio 1, to be able to take this picture from the side of the stage. It gives more depth to the image and as most photographers are now banned from the wings, it is also a rare shot of all of them performing together.
